Mendocino County consists wholly of the Ukiah, CA Micropolitan Statistical Area for the purposes of the U.S. Census Bureau. It is located approximately equidistant from the San Francisco Bay Area and California/Oregon border, separated from the Sacramento Valley to the east by the California Coast Ranges. While smaller areas of redwood forest are found further south, it is the southernmost California county to be included in the World Wildlife Fund’s Pacific temperate rainforests ecoregion, the largest temperate rainforest ecoregion on the planet.
Mendocino County is home to 88,000 plus California Citizens. Located on the north coast of California between Humboldt and Sonoma counties. Mendocino county shares borders with Lake, Glenn, Tehama, and Trinity counties to the east.
Mendocino County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Due to an initially minor settler American population, it did not have a separate government until 1859 and was under the administration of Sonoma County prior to that. Some of the county’s land was given to Sonoma County between 1850 and 1860.
The economy of Mendocino county is variously diverse. Specifically, the largest industries in Mendocino County are in health care, social assistance, retail and education. Mendocino is home to College of the Redwood, Mendocino College, Pacific Union College and Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Mendocino is known for its majestic coast line, its location on the Lost Coast, its Redwood Forests, Its award-winning wine production and craft breweries.
U.S. Route 101 is the mainly north south transportation route, while State Route 1 is famous for its scenic coast views. The diverse population, geography, industry and transportation characteristics of Mendocino county generate unique and complex legal issues.
